CDCP for Children: Accepting Canadian Dental Care Plan

We’re happy to announce that Brite Bite is now accepting the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) to help children and families get the dental care they need! The CDCP is available to children under 18, seniors, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. If you or your child are eligible for CDCP, we’re here to make sure you receive high-quality dental care in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Sun Life administers the CDCP and provides coverage details, ensuring smooth communication with dentists and delivering welcome packages to beneficiaries.

Introduction to Dental Coverage

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program designed to provide dental coverage to eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to private or workplace dental insurance. This initiative aims to improve oral health care for Canadians by reducing financial barriers to dental care. The CDCP is a key component of the federal government’s efforts to enhance the oral health of Canadians, particularly those with low-to-moderate incomes. As a comprehensive dental care plan, the CDCP provides coverage for a range of essential dental services, including preventive care, restorative care, and emergency care.

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

CDCP is a government-funded dental program designed to help eligible Canadians cover part of their dental expenses. The program pays a percentage of the CDCP-approved fee, reducing out-of-pocket costs for families. The CDCP is available to children under the age of 18, seniors, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. Applicants must provide information about their spouse or common-law partner. Additionally, applicants must have filed their tax returns for the relevant year.

Eligibility and Enrollment

To be eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), individuals must meet certain criteria, including having an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000 per year. The program is designed for Canadian residents who do not have dental insurance coverage, including those with low-to-moderate incomes. Eligible individuals can apply for the CDCP through the Health Canada website or by contacting their local oral health provider. The application process involves providing personal and financial information, including proof of income and family size. Once enrolled, individuals will receive a welcome package with information on the coverage start date, services covered, and co-payment requirements.

What Does CDCP Cover?

CDCP helps cover essential dental treatments, including:

✅ Dental exams & cleanings

✅ Fillings

✅ X-rays

✅ Tooth extractions

✅ Some preventive treatments

✅ Laughing gas (nitrous oxide), sedation, and general anesthesia for eligible procedures

The CDCP covers a range of essential dental services and is managed by Health Canada and administered by Sun Life. Dental providers must bill Sun Life directly for the services provided under the CDCP.

What You Need to Know About CDCP Coverage

  • CDCP does not cover the full cost of treatment. It pays a percentage of the CDCP fee guide, which may be lower than our regular office fees. CDCP patients may have co-payments and partial coverage for dental treatments.

  • Patients are responsible for any difference between the CDCP fee and our office fee. This is called a copayment, and it is due at the time of treatment. Individuals should understand their eligibility for CDCP before scheduling a dental appointment.

  • Checkups and cleanings for children under 12 are limited to once per year. Additional cleanings or services may not be covered. Eligibility for CDCP depends on whether individuals have dental benefits and their household income.

  • If a child requires dental treatment, we can submit an estimate to CDCP so families will know exactly what their coverage includes and how much they may need to pay.

How to Apply for CDCP

If you are not yet enrolled in the CDCP program and believe you may be eligible, you can apply directly through the Government of Canada website. The eligibility criteria include having a household income of less than $90,000 a year and not having dental insurance coverage. The program offers dental care subsidies to Canadian residents who meet these criteria.

If You Have Private Dental Insurance

If you currently have private dental insurance, we strongly recommend that you keep it. Private insurance typically offers better coverage than CDCP, with fewer restrictions on the number of visits and procedures covered. Individuals are not eligible for CDCP if they have dental insurance coverage purchased by them or a family member, as long as that coverage is active.
